Have you ever read something by an author who you've read a lot of autobiographical stuff by? It's strange, because reading Anne Lamott's novels, the scenarios are pulled right from her life, and all the characters are her. Maybe we all just see everyone in our lives as greater or lesser parodies of ourselves?
It means that I'm definitely finding her novel interesting, but not surprising. Maybe I just need to not read so much by one author all at once. The other books I brought on this trip are "Like Water for Chocolate", a Mexican novel that was refered to in High School by a very cool English teacher, but I've never read it; "The Source" by James Michner, basically a brief rundown on what it would have been like in a city in Israel from the early days of man until modern (1980's) times, it's all archeology and fiction, and I like it; and finally "How to Make an American Quilt", it was a Winona Ryder movie in the mid-nineties, I think it's like a precursor to the ya-ya sisterhood, and all those other books about looking into your mother's/ grandma's past to find out who you are as a woman and a human, etc. I'm here for six days. I hope I have enough. That's the curse of being a fast reader. People are always amazed, but you have to bring pounds of reading material with you where ever you go so you don't run out.
